Vic: Blackshirts leader ready for jail rather than drop demos

The leader of a vigilante men's group says he's ready to go to jail rather than giveup his family values demonstrations.

The comments from Blackshirts leader JOHN ABBOTT came just minutes after VictorianCounty Court Judge PETER RENDIT upheld intervention orders against him.

Judge RENDIT's described ABBOTT's group's paramilitary garb as suggestive of the BlackShirts of fascist Italy under MUSSOLINI.

Mr ABBOTT appealed the orders granted by a magistrate after he led a series of actionsby the radical men's group outside women's homes last year in suburban Melbourne.

The group claims it's dedicated to upholding the sanctity of the family and protectingchildren against the corrupting influence of so-called adulterers.

But Judge RENDIT says Mr ABBOTT's actions amount to stalking.

Earlier today, Mr ABBOTT and three other members of his group told a hearing at RingwoodMagistrates Court they'll contest stalking charges laid by police over the same incidentsin September last year.

The three are due to return to Ringwood court on December 9.
