Nelson was spared the death sentence because a split jury verdict found he had stabbedMr Rosenbaum but did not directly cause his death.

The jury believed defence arguments that Mr Rosenbaum's wounds were non-lethal andhe died of botched medical care.

"Here we have an admission of guilt and because of a technicality - if he caused thedeath or didn't cause the death - he walks in nine months," Mr Abraham said.

He said he expected US politicians to try to change the legal system in reaction to the case.

Mr Abraham said the Rosenbaum family expected to be disappointed by the penalty.

"The problem is the parents go back home to Australia with two memories," he said.

"One, of Yankel, and two, that there's no justice."
