FED:Aust stocks expected to be down on opening

SYDNEY, Aug 5 AAP/Agencies - Australian financial markets are expected to take a big
hit on Friday, following Wall Street and Europe into losses as markets around the world
react in fear of further economic downturn.

At 0632 AEST on the ASX 24 on Friday, the September share price index futures contract
was down 156 points at 4,086.

The benchmark S&P/ASX200 index had ended on Thursday down 56.3 points, or 1.3 per cent,
at 4,276.5, while the broader All Ordinaries index was down 55.4 points, or 1.26 per cent,
at 4,352.9.

The Australian share market opens at 10am (AEST).

The Australian dollar has also dropped overnight - down more than two US cents, trading
at 104.63 US cents at 7am (AEST).

Australia is expected to follow Wall St, where overnight the Dow Jones Industrial Average
plunged 4.3 per cent in its worst one-day drop since the financial crisis.

The Dow closed down 512.76 points to 11,383.68. The broader S&P 500 lost 4.8 per cent
to 1,200.07, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite plunged 5.1 per cent to 2,556.39.

European stocks also fell more than three per cent

More turmoil over sovereign debt problems in Europe and feeble US economic data are
stoking "fear that the economy is heading for a double-dip recession," Peter Cardillo
of Rockwell Global Capital said of Wall St.

"The market is pricing that in," he said.

The last time that the Dow fell as many points in a single day was in October 2008,
during the global financial crisis.

All three indices are now well below the level at which they began 2011.

Markets worldwide were on edge over fiscal weakness in Italy and Spain and the eurozone's
ability to contain more crisis, as the two countries' borrowing costs surged in recent
days.

Meanwhile, the Reserve Bank of Australia will issue its quarterly Statement on Monetary
Policy which is expected to show its thinking on interest rate movements.

RACE:Black Caviar steals the show
EDs: Reissuing to correct description as Victorian in sixth par

By Doug Conway, AAP Senior Correspondent

SYDNEY, April 9 AAP - They came to see one horse, Black Caviar, and the Usain Bolt
of horseracing did not let them down.

A vocal crowd of more than 25,000 at Randwick cheered the world's fastest horse out
onto the track.

They roared her home again to victory in the $1 million TJ Smith Stakes, and they rose
to give her a standing ovation in the mounting yard.

Jockey Luke Nolen applauded the super mare too, dropping his reins to clap the champion
as he trotted her back after keeping her unbeaten record intact with a 12th win from 12
starts.

Black Caviar herself seemed to lap up the attention, posing for photos long after flashing
past the post.

Victorian filly Shamrocker may have won the biggest race of the day, the $1.5 million
Australian Derby stayers' classic.

But Black Caviar was always going to steal the show.

It's not often that a horse can create an atmosphere like this.

It takes champions like Phar Lap, Tulloch, Vain, Kingston Town, Lonhro, Makybe Diva,
Takeover Target and Gunsynd.

But Black Caviar looks destined to give them all a run for their money in the popularity stakes.

Special buses were laid on to bring punters to the big smoke from the country to see
the four-year-old wonder mare.

Thousands waved flags in Black Caviar's colours of salmon pink with black dots.

A couple of the owners' kids wore the horse's colours in silks.

Black Caviar lapel ribbons, photos and other merchandise was on sale, and one lucky
punter won a $12,000 Black Caviar bet on the nose.

Even at the ludicrously low odds of $1.14 it was enough to turn a $1680 profit.

They cheered her everywhere, from the public stands to the corporate marquees peopled
by the likes of autumn carnival ambassador Jodi Gordon, David Jones ambassadors Megan
Gale and Emma Freedman and Emirates' special guest, English rugby star Danny Cipriani.

Black Caviar part-owner Neil Werrett was a bag of nerves.

"I've just got to remember to breathe," he said.

"This race was named after a legendary trainer in Tommy Smith.

"We hope in the future we have a legendary horse."

The future seems to have arrived.

FED:Young people favour friends for sex info

Eds: Embargoed until 0001 AEST Thursday, August 12

CANBERRA, Aug 12 AAP - Young people are more likely to talk to friends about sex and
their bodies, but favour doctors when it comes to issues such as contraception, a new
survey has revealed.

The survey by Family Planning NSW and online networking website MySpace Australia polled
more than 1000 people aged between 12 and 24 in June and July about where they went for
sex and puberty-related information.

When it came to body changes, more than 50 per cent of respondents said they spoke
to their friends, 45 per cent used the internet and 33 per cent talked to their parents
or schools.

Similarly, when wanting information on sexual activities, nearly half of all of those
surveyed said they went to friends too.

Partners and the internet was the next most common source, used by more than 33 per
cent of respondents, while schools came in last, with about 20 per cent choosing this
option.

However, on the subject of contraception, doctors were the most commonly used source
(48 per cent), while parents and the internet only attracted a third of respondents.

About half of young people polled preferred their GP for information on sexual health
matters, and parents and schools were likely to be used by just under a quarter of respondents.

FED: Five road deaths at start of Easter long weekend

By Andrew Drummond

SYDNEY, April 2 AAP - Australia's Easter long weekend road toll stands at five with
three of the deaths involving motorcycle accidents in Victoria and the ACT.

In the Victorian smash, two men died when their motorbikes collided head-on near Shepparton
in the state's central region.

The collision occurred about 2.20pm (AEDT) on Friday on the Dookie-Shepparton Road.

Another man, 53, and a woman, 18, riding separate motorbikes, were seriously injured
after swerving to avoid the collision. They have been airlifted to hospital.

Also on Friday in the ACT, a 46-year-old motorcyclist died after his bike left Uriarra
Road, north of Cotter Dam, and went down an embankment.

The incident occurred about 1pm (AEDT) and the man, from the ACT suburb of Holt, died
at the scene, police said.

South Australia recorded its first Easter road death in two years on Friday about 2.40pm
(AEDT) when a vehicle rolled off a road about 2km north of Eudunda, killing a woman.

The first Easter road death occurred in NSW on Thursday when a utility and a small
four-wheel drive collided on the state's south coast.

An 86-year-old woman died after the Toyota Hilux she was a passenger in collided with
a Honda CRV about 1pm (AEDT) on Thursday on Darkes Forest Road, north of Wollongong.

The woman and the driver of the utility, an 85-year-old man, were taken to St George
Hospital where the woman later died, police said.

The four people in the Honda - the 54-year-old female driver, a 55-year-old male passenger,
an infant girl aged 16 months and a female toddler almost three years old - escaped injury.

Meanwhile, police in NSW and Victoria are dismayed at the attitude of drivers this Easter.

In the 24 hours up to midnight (AEDT) Thursday, NSW police issued 2,191 traffic infringement
notices, including 1,460 for speeding.

In Victoria, just a few hours into the long weekend, police said 863 drivers had been
caught speeding, with another 57 charged with drink driving.

NSW Assistant Commissioner John Hartley, who heads up the Traffic Services Branch,
on Friday warned motorists police would maintain a high presence throughout the long weekend.

"Police will be out there playing their part to keep the roads safe this holiday period,"

he said in a statement.

"However, it's the responsibility of individual drivers which will determine whether
they reach their destination in one piece."

Victorian deputy commissioner for road policing Ken Lay urged motorists to slow down.

"I urge people who are on the road today to think about that and just remember, slowing
down will not kill you, but speeding could," he said.

5. Some states and territories may have different periods.)

BRISBANE, Aug 3 AAP - RSPCA officers, accompanied by Queensland police officers, have
seized 120 dogs and 250 rats from a North Queensland property in what is believed to be
the largest such seizure in the state.

It took nearly 12 hours to load the animals seized in the raid on a home near Calcium,
50km south of Townsville, on Thursday, police said.

Senior Sergeant John Bosnjak of Stuart police told the Townsville Bulletin that police
attended the raid to make sure the scene was safe.

"The scene was overwhelming and I can't explain the stench," he said.

"It was a sight to be seen.

"Every room was filled with animals and they were in the beds and everywhere."

The animals were owned by a couple aged in their 40s, Snr Sgt Bosnjak said.

Some dogs in a healthy condition, and a number of rats, were reportedly allowed to
remain at the property.

The RSPCA declined to comment while investigations were continuing.

Vic: Wind farm company blames market constraints for closure

By Catherine Best

MELBOURNE, Aug 22 AAP - A major world supplier of wind farm technology has been forced
to turn its back on Australia because, it says, the green energy market is unviable.

Vestas Australia Wind Technology will close its Portland turbine blade factory at the
end of the year because it is not profitable.

One hundred and thirty jobs will be lost, with the closure casting major doubt over
the viability of Australia's renewable energy industry.

Vestas says it could no longer justify keeping the plant open because the investment
was not worthwhile in the Australian market.

"It's definitely a fact that the current environment for the wind industry is not big
enough to encourage these kinds of investments," Vestas Asia-Pacific senior vice-president
Jorn Hammer told AAP.

"We have the view that if the government steps up to the plate and puts the necessary
security for a long-term market in place we'll have another look at the market, but I
guess we'll be a little more careful next time.

"(Not) just believing in what they've been telling us, we need to see some hard evidence
to justify investment."

The federal government has set a two per cent renewable energy target, labelled "pathetic"

by Greenpeace which says it is not enough to encourage a green power industry.

Labor and the Australian Workers' Union (AWU) have also blamed the government for the
Vestas closure, accusing Canberra of stifling the industry.

The Danish-based company last year closed a similar $15 million factory in Tasmania,
laying off 65 staff.

The Wynyard plant, near Burnie, 345km north-west of Hobart, operated for three years,
manufacturing blade hubs and nacelle components for its wind turbines.

Mr Hammer said the plant closed for the same reason the Portland factory was shutting down.

The Portland operation opened two years ago and produces export turbine blades.

Vestas had hoped to invest in new technology to develop blades for the Australian market
but could not justify the outlay, Mr Hammer said.

The company will continue to employ about 200 people around Australia in technical
and support roles but its manufacturing operations here will cease.

Mr Hammer said the company would fulfil its employee obligations and was working with
the union to help workers find new jobs.

"It's very sad, it was not an easy decision for us, we feel very much for our employees
in Portland," he said.

Tas: Miners alive and apparently unharmed

By Jane Bunce

BEACONSFIELD, Tas, April 30 AAP - Two miners found alive after five days trapped underground
in a Tasmanian mine are apparently unharmed, protected by the cage of a cherry picker.

Miners Todd Russell, 35, and Brant Webb, 36, were located just before 7pm (AEST) today
after a rock fall on Tuesday night at the Beaconsfield Gold Mine near Launceston.

Their workmate, 44-year-old Larry Knight, was killed in the accident, caused by an
earthquake. His body was retrieved on Thursday.

Beaconsfield Gold Mine management tonight briefed the families of Mr Russell and Mr Webb.

It is believed the men were protected from the rockfall by a cherry picker cage.

"They've heard them speaking," Mr Webb's mother-in-law Julie Kelly told reporters.

"There was a big slab of rock over their cage, so they are unhurt.

"They are saying how they are not hurt was because there was nothing (no rocks) in the cage."

Mrs Kelly said management had told them they could hear the miners but not clearly.

"They are all right," she said.

"Obviously they will be dehydrated and everything, but they are just wanting them to hurry up."

Mr Webb's father-in-law Michael Kelly said the rescue effort was entering its most crucial phase.

"You can imagine if you're in a little pocket for five days, you would be fairly cramped
and not feeling too good," he said.

"And they've got to get them out safely."

Mr Kelly said he did not know how far into the mine the tunnels reached or when the
miners would be rescued.

"It could be tomorrow night, it could be tomorrow afternoon, but they'll keep us informed,"

he said.

Mr Kelly said management were trying to send better audio equipment into the mine to
learn more about the miners situation.

Police Inspector Paul Reynolds said mine management was considering the best way to
rescue the men.

"They are looking at how they, as safe as possible, can get to the two miners," he said.

"Our big priority here is not to do anything that may jeopardise the safety of either
of the two miners."

Inspector Reynolds said he had not been given a timeline for the pair's rescue.

NSW: Mother hit child until she stopped crying, court told

ORANGE, NSW, Feb 1 AAP - A woman charged with murdering her nine-month-old baby girl
had once hit the child until she stopped crying, Orange Local Court was today.

A child giving evidence by closed circuit television told magistrate Jan Stevenson
that he had seen Juanita Leslie Schoultz, 24, smack her baby girl Elissa Schoultz-McNabb
a number of times.

"She hit her because she wouldn't stop crying," the boy said in a taped police interview
played at today's committal hearing.

He also said he had seen Schoultz physically assaulting other family members.

Schoultz, of Orange, in the NSW central west, has been in psychiatric care since being
charged last June with murdering Elissa on February 22 last year.

She has not been required to enter a plea.

Under questioning from Schoultz's counsel Winston Terracini, SC, the boy said he'd
seen Elissa's older brother attack her on Christmas Day, 2004, when she touched one of
his toys.

"He threw it at her and it hit her in the head and it knocked her out of her stroller,"

the child said.

The court has been told that a post-mortem examination had shown the baby died from
a fractured skull, along with evidence of other injuries.

Mr Terracini said large sections of the taped police interview with the boy were "hearsay".

The hearing continues.

Vic: Grieving relatives call for safety upgrade after drowning

Grief stricken relatives have condemned safety measures at a popular Victorian tourist
site after four members of the same family drowned in a Christmas Day tragedy in the state's
west.

Twelve-year-old MARINA MIR died after she fell into a rockpool at McKenzies Falls in
the Grampians national park on Christmas Day.

Her father MUZAFFER, who was 55, and uncles MAHZAR DAR and TAHIR BHATTI, both aged
35, all poor or non-swimmers, died after they dived in and tried to save her.

Today, KHALID MIR, one of the dead girl's uncles, said the tragedy has been a doomsday
for the family and a fence should have been erected.

Mr MIR says while there was a sign warning against swimming in the pool beneath the
falls, it was invisible.

But local police inspector, BOB THOMSON, says the safety measures in place are adequate
and the falls safe, if the signs are observed.

A 17-year-old girl, who also dived in as part of the rescue, has reportedly been released
from hospital.

With Carol Wright, things finally all right

D ear Fixer: I have been in contact with the Carol Wright mail order company numerous times to try to solve my problem.

It all started on Aug. 23, when I returned a panel of curtains and two scarves. The curtain was damaged and I wanted the two scarves replaced with curtains.

There was money left over so I ordered two pairs of capris and I wrote a check for the difference of $8.94.

I didn't hear from Carol Wright so I called them in October. They said the order was not in their system and they had no record of the original invoice. They didn't honor my request and said it would take a month for my merchandise to be returned.

So I waited another month and called again. I got the same response. A call on Dec. 7 was no better.

On Dec. 29 I spoke with a supervisor. She said she would check into it and I should call her back in two weeks.

Two weeks later I was told they never got my package. Thank goodness I had a receipt. They wanted to know who signed for it and on what day and time, so I told them.

I called again on Jan. 19 and was told they want a copy of everything.

I'm tired of jumping through hoops.

Marlene Fisher, Midlothian

Dear Marlene: We've always admired the serendipitous wonders of the Carol Wright catalog — or Dr. Leonard's, another mail-order catalog issued by the same New Jersey company, Dr. Leonard's Healthcare Corp.

Flipping the pages, you'll find everything from magnifying tweezers and folding canes to house dresses and floral bedspreads. There are do-it-yourself legal will kits and miracle strawberry plants that yield fruits the size of peaches, or so we're told.

Back to your issue. Part of the problem — and you admitted this — was that you had been trying to return the merchandise long after it was ordered.

Joe Albanese, vice president and chief financial officer at Dr. Leonard's, told Team Fixer the company gives customers one year to return items. The oldest order the company had on file from you was from December 2008, and it didn't include the merchandise you were trying to return. So the items you were trying to send back apparently had been ordered at some point before then.

Still, Albanese said the company dropped the ball from a customer service standpoint. He said things can slip through the cracks, noting the company ships out 40,000 orders a day. As a result, they are going above and beyond to fix this.

The company is refunding you $40.91, which includes the check you sent in August. (By the way, for some reason Carol Wright had no record of receiving the check.) The company also is giving you $30 in gift certificates "in hopes that (you) will allow Carol Wright Gifts to service (your) shopping needs in the future," Albanese said.

Costly lesson

George, of Westmont, thought he was getting a great deal on a new Remington razor when he found one at an online merchant for $119.99.

When his razor arrived, it was in the original packaging, but it wasn't "new."

Here's what George wrote to The Fixer:

"I charged it for 24 hours before using. When I went to shave, it didn't work. I charged it another 24 hours and the razor went dead before the shave was completed."

So George contacted Remington's customer service department. He learned that his model of razor had been discontinued in 2006, which explains why the battery was so lousy. The manufacturer offered to replace it with a comparable razor if George would pay another $59.99.

When George went back to the Internet merchant for help, it said it couldn't adjust his bill because he had returned the razor to the manufacturer and not the Internet merchant.

No one expects to receive a product that was discontinued five years ago when they order online. But with shady sellers on the Web, it's worth researching which products are current by going to the manufacturer's website and by reading recommendations from Consumer Reports.

Good luck out there, folks.

HealthStar Corp. Signs Letter of Intent to Merge With Secure Broadband Networking Firm, Assured Digital, Inc.

AVENTURA, Fla., Jan. 2 /PRNewswire/ --

HealthStar Corp. (OTC Bulletin Board: PPOS.OB) announced today that it has entered into a Letter of Intent to merge with Assured Digital, Inc. ("ADI"). ADI designs and distributes advanced virtual private networking (VPN) solutions that automate secure business-to-business (B2B) communications over the public Internet.

According to Infonetics Research, the VPN industry is a $10 billion market projected to grow to $29 billion over the next three years. B2B communications are experiencing significant growth as companies are outsourcing and integrating their critical information systems with business partners. In addition, telecommuting and globalization are two major industry trends driving companies to build global communication networks that are secure and cost-effective.

ADI addresses the B2B infrastructure needs of companies by providing low-cost, robust, worldwide data networks that can connect anyone, at any time, anywhere using a combination of the public Internet and a proprietary VPN line of products based on open standards. ADI products range from a central-office VPN concentrator switch to intelligent VPN edge switches and client software. ADI's hardware/software-based AOS(TM) (Automated Operation and Security) suite is built into each ADI device for automated network connectivity and security management. ADI is one of a limited number of VPN vendors that can support the unique networking requirements of the broadband industry. Cable and telecommunications companies such as Media One and a major Internet service provider have deployed ADI VPN solutions.

"We are excited to offer HealthStar shareholders the opportunity to participate in this rapidly growing area of the Internet infrastructure space," said Edward M. Chism, HealthStar's CEO. "The B2B backbone is where we see the next generation Internet headed, and the contemplated merger would position HealthStar to aggressively compete in this arena," he added. Roland Gerard, CEO of ADI, commented that "The merger with HealthStar will strengthen ADI's competitive positioning, as we become a public company with increased visibility and easier access to the capital markets."

ADI has recently entered into a Letter of Intent to acquire TelekomNet, Inc., a B2B exchange for the telecommunications and networking industry. TelekomNet sells over 50,000 telecom and networking equipment products to IT professionals, OEM's, communication service providers, value-added resellers and systems integrators. This acquisition will give ADI access to the $277 billion telecom infrastructure equipment industry. TelekomNet has over 1,000 corporate customers including Ariba, IBM and Hewlett Packard and has distribution and content alliances with Cisco, 3Com, Cabletron, Toshiba, Nortel, Lucent, Intel, Cable & Wireless, CommerceOne, Nippon Telecom, PSINet and others.

The combined companies will allow network managers to cost-efficiently increase the span of their corporate networks, open secure access to remote users, integrate business partners and their applications, enable enterprises to outsource hosting of servers and applications and provide substantial incremental value-added services.

The merger is subject to a number of customary conditions, including, but not limited to, final due diligence, negotiation and execution of definitive agreements, governmental approvals, and the approval of HealthStar and ADI's shareholders, as well as the consummation of ADI's acquisition of TelekomNet, Inc. Accordingly, there can be no assurance that the merger will occur. Further, if the merger is effectuated pursuant to the letter of intent, the shareholders of HealthStar will own approximately 27.7% of the merged Company, or approximately 22.8% on a fully diluted basis. ADI shareholders would also appoint a majority of the board of directors.

Lucent Technologies GuestWorks offers hotel guests direct dial personal numbers and 911 alerts to pager; TownePlace Suites by Marriott first to extend new features to guestss.

M2 PRESSWIRE-5 April 2000-LUCENT TECHNOLOGIES: Lucent Technologies GuestWorks offers hotel guests direct dial personal numbers and 911 alerts to pager; TownePlace Suites by Marriott first to extend new features to guestss (C)1994-2000 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD

RDATE:04042000

BASKING RIDGE, N.J. -- Lucent Technologies' (NYSE: LU) Enterprise Networks Group today announced several new features for its GuestWorks system that provide hotel guests with direct dial personal telephone lines, automatic data and telephone port set-up upon check-in and delivery of crisis alerts to hotel management pagers for 911 emergency calls.

GuestWorks is an integrated, turnkey communications system that incorporates call processing, messaging, phones and services. The GuestWorks Release 6.0 upgrade offers business travelers -- particularly extended-stay guests - features that make it easier for callers to reach them directly and have access to data links quickly. The release also improves a hotel staff's ability to quickly respond to guest emergencies.

The latest version of GuestWorks allows guests to take advantage of the automatic selection of Direct Inward Dial (DID) numbers. Hotel guests can now receive calls directly to their rooms without intervention from the hotel attendant. The communication system can maintain a dedicated block of DID numbers that are assigned automatically when a guest checks into a room. This capability allows guests to give a direct dial number to callers, allowing greater protection of room privacy so connection between a hotel room number and telephone extension is never required.

TownePlace Suites by Marriott in Kennesaw, Ga., which is owned and operated by Day Hospitality Group, is the first to offer the latest GuestWorks features to its guests at the 83-room property in the Atlanta suburb. The hotel uses GuestWorks' DID capabilities to issue guests direct toll-free numbers that can be given to business colleagues or family at the guest's expense.

"The GuestWorks personalized direct dialing feature is a new source of revenue and a nice option to offer our guests and make them feel at home, particularly our extended-stay travelers, " said Warren Schatzle, general manager of TownePlace Suites in Kennesaw. "We're able to increase guest satisfaction and provide a greater sense of privacy and personalization." GuestWorks Release 6.0 also offers a crisis alert to pager feature that signals the hotel console and up to three designated digital pagers that a 911 call has been placed. The system emits a siren-like audible alert and the guests' name and extension number appear on the console display and multiple administrative telephones so hotel staff can respond quickly.

With the Suite Check-in feature, guests no longer have to wait for the telecommunications manager to manually assign and activate multiple extensions in a room. In one command, GuestWorks 6.0 software automatically establishes the extensions upon a guest's check-in. Previously, a hotel telecommunications manager needed additional time to "check-in" additional extensions.

Lucent's GuestWorks can support up to 25,000 voice and data phone lines - making it ideal for properties of all sizes. The features announced today are generally available worldwide. For more information on GuestWorks, customers may call 800-247-7000, talk to their authorized Lucent dealer or access http://www.lucent.com/enterprise.

By the end of September, Lucent Technologies intends to spin off its enterprise communications systems, business cabling and LAN-based data networking businesses, including GuestWorks, into a separate $8 billion company focused on delivering next-generation communications networks for enterprises. The new company will be the worldwide leader in messaging and call centers, the U.S. leader in voice communications systems, and will have the largest sales and services force in the industry.

Lucent Technologies, headquartered in Murray Hill, N.J., USA, designs and delivers the systems, software, silicon and services for next-generation communications networks for service providers and enterprises. Backed by the research and development of Bell Labs, Lucent focuses on high-growth areas such as optical and wireless networks; Internet infrastructure; communications software; communications semiconductors and optoelectronics; Web-based enterprise solutions that link private and public networks; and professional network design and consulting services. Stock of Norcross, Ga.-Based Banking Technology Firm Jumps.

Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News

Jul. 28 -- A company that hasn't garnered many headlines or much notice from analysts was one of the hottest local technology stocks this week, hitting a 52-week high briefly Tuesday before closing at $24.50, up $4.

Shares of Norcross-based InterCept Group are up 32 percent over the last five trading sessions and 237 percent for 1999.

Since Monday, about 1.4 million shares of InterCept Group have been trading each day. InterCept Group's average daily volume is about 33,800.

Bob Bolen, an analyst with J.C. Bradford & Co., has a "strong buy" rating on InterCept. In a June report on the company, Bolen said its internal growth is steady and its acquisition strategy is starting to pay off. J.C. Bradford underwrote InterCept's June 1998 initial public offering.

Bolen said he thinks InterCept Group might be benefiting from the increased attention being paid to companies such as Norcross-based nFront, which offers Internet banking solutions to community banks.

Four analyst firms initiated coverage of nFront with "buy" recommendations in the past two days.

The 220-employee InterCept Group makes and sells products that allow community banks to do such things as transfer money electronically and offer ATM access to their customers. But in March, the company bought Direct Access Interactive, an Internet banking company, which put it directly in the Internet banking market.

Companies helping community banks move to the Internet have received more attention from analysts in recent days. Richard Bove at Raymond James initiated coverage of nFront, with a "buy" rating and a 12-month target price of $30.

Three other brokerage firms issued "buy" ratings on the Norcross company Monday. Despite the attention, nFront closed Tuesday at $16.75, down 31 1/4 cents.

Its shares sold for as high as $25.87 1/2 on July 6, up 158 percent from its June 29 initial public offering price of $10.

Also, Manhattan Associates, an Atlanta maker of supply-chain management software, was downgraded to "hold" by Peter H. Jacobson of Kaufman Brothers.

Manhattan Associates' shares were unchanged Tuesday, closing at $7.75.

Its shares are down 6.2 percent over the last five trading sessions and 70.6 percent for the year.

"Cybersecurity continues to be a complex problem that needs to be addressed throughout the entire communication path," said Miller. "Internet Service Providers, or ISPs, have a unique role in the protection of this path based on their centrality to the Internet, and their connections to downstream ISPs, enterprises or consumers."

Miller's presentation, "Transforming the Internet Service Provider's Role in Cybersecurity," will explain how, by deploying cybersecurity at the ISP level, a new class of "Assured" services can be offered.

"This new class of 'Assured' services will improve the level of protection for customers," Miller continued. "In addition, advanced perimeter security measures can be simplified by deploying cybersecurity within the Internet Service Provider cloud."

Dubai port giant takes shipment of good news.(Reprint)

This news was brought to you by www.7days.ae

Dubai ports giant DP World has announced a 14 per cent jump in its business in 2010, as its ports handled the equivalent of almost 50 million shipping containers.

The firm, the world's third-largest seaport operator, said its ports handled the equivalent of 49.6 million standard 20-foot cargo containers, up from 43.4 million in 2009.

The increase in cargo movements reflected the expansion of its global network and a resurgence in trade as the world economy begins to pick up steam.

In a statement DP World said it saw the strongest gains in Asia, Australia and the Americas.

The firm's chief executive, Mohammed Sharaf said the growth puts the firm on track to report financial results in line with analysts' expectations and ahead of last year's figures. DP World's full earnings are expected in March.

The company currently operates 49 sea cargo terminals on six continents, including Jebel Ali in Dubai, the Middle East's busiest.

DP World reported its UAE volumes rose 4 per cent to the equivalent of 11.6 million containers in 2010, a level executives said was a return to the boom-time peak levels last seen, pre-financial crisis, in 2008.

Poker HQ primes to lose 600 Dublin staff.(News)

MORE than 600 jobs are at risk at the internet poker gambling firm Pocket King's Dublin headquarters.

The Gambling Control Commission of Alderney, the third-largest of the Channel Islands, suspended its parent company's licence. Pocket Kings employs more than 600 staff at the Cherrywood Science and Technology Park.

It established a base here in 2006 and provides functions such as IT support, fraud detection, marketing and customer services to Full Tilt Poker, which is licensed in Alderney.

Reports say that the authorities on the island found evidence that the site was violating local laws.

This is the second blow for the company and for the global poker gambling industry after a major crackdown in the U.S. since last year.

LOGISTICS TROOPS SUPPORT SOLDIERS IN AFGHANISTAN.

FORWARD OPERATING BASE SHARANA, Afghanistan -- The following information was released by the Department of Defense American Forces Press Service:

By Karen Parrish

American Forces Press Service

Army Lt. Col. Dave Preston and Army Command Sgt. Maj. Gary Holder are the command team for the 801st Brigade Support Battalion, a unit that provides food, fuel, ammunition and more for soldiers assigned to the 101st Airborne Division's 4th Brigade Combat Team here.

"The challenges here in Paktika are the hardest thing I've ever dealt with in my career, but our soldiers make it easy," Preston said. "They care and they bust their tails on a daily basis."

Preston said he keeps his soldiers "outside the wire" much of the time, making sure the brigade's outlying troop locations have all the supplies that they need, in keeping with the battalion's motto: "No Mission Will Fail Due to Logistics."

"Here at Sharana we're living pretty good," Preston said. "But probably five out of seven days of the week, there's a member of this battalion out on an outlying [forward operating base or combat outpost] helping out."

Preston said he and Holder identified their two-word mission focus as soon as they arrived in Afghanistan: support forward.

Preston said he and members of his staff visit the brigade's 20-plus installations positioned throughout Paktika province regularly, spending two days each week walking the bases where soldiers live and identifying ways to improve living conditions.

"I ask the chain of command when I leave, 'What are your top three needs?'" Preston said. "A lot of times, there's a helicopter there the next day with what they want."

Preston said his battalion has provided the smaller posts with showers and cold-storage containers for food, as well as ensuring regular mail and fuel delivery to even the most-remote locations.

Medical teams also regularly visit the small troop locations, Preston said, noting, "That keeps your combat power forward [and] it builds trust. Everybody knows our providers and they love our providers."

"We had to gain credibility by coming through," he said. "Support soldiers kind of get a bad rap in an infantry brigade ... we have to get out there and do everything we can for them, which is what we've done."

Preston credits his four companies of troops with a long list of accomplishments: delivering 6 million pounds of cargo by helicopter, providing force protection for supply convoys to areas accessible by road, managing 9,400 categories of supply items, rebuilding an entire fleet of forklifts, running the medical clinic, and supplying fuel for vehicles and generators.

"They've never let us down when we've set a standard for them," Preston said.

The lieutenant colonel said his battalion's companies have worked hard with their Afghan counterparts.

The medical company set up and conducted a version of the Army's Expert Field Medical Badge competition with their Afghan partners, Preston said.

The Afghan competition consisted of 15 tasks including treating a patient under fire, litter carry, evacuating a patient by helicopter, and a road march, Preston said.

"They did that for the whole day," he said. "They've never done anything like that before -- incredible training that the soldiers [have] had."

Similar competitions are planned for the battalion's other two companies, Preston said. One of the companies will run a truck rodeo with driving tasks, he said, and the other will conduct a mechanics' rodeo.

"The Afghans love competition," he said. "So we set that up, and for a month prior our guys are training them on all these tasks. So they get excellent training and it's fun for them."

Preston said he and his staff put a priority on maintaining high morale in the battalion.

"We're here 365 days, working 18 hours-a -day, seven-days-a-week," he said. "So we do things like monthly barbecues ... we're in combat here and we don't lose sight of that, but we try to keep an environment where it's not serious 24 hours-a-day."

Holder agreed that maintaining morale for the troops has been a high priority during the deployment. Making sure the soldiers have internet access, so they can stay in touch with their families, "has been a huge morale boost," he said.

"Something as small as allowing them to wear [physical training uniforms of shorts and T-shirts] on Sundays, when they're not turning wrenches or working on a forklift," gives soldiers a needed break, Holder said.

It's also important to provide the troops with enough rest time, Holder said.

"We've seen what happens when you just try to work someone for 365 days," he said. "Somewhere in the middle, they just fall on their face. So we try our best to give them one day-a-week where they can relax a little."

Preston said he and Holder have been planning the battalion's transition to its replacement unit for six months, streamlining contracts and clearing broken down equipment from troop locations to make the incoming unit's job easier.

"It's about being a professional organization," he said. "Everybody complains about the way they get things handed to them -- well, we're not going to give [our replacements] anything to complain about."

HIGH GASOLINE PRICES DRIVE U.K. CONSUMERS TO THE WEB.

LONDON -- The following information was released by the National Association of Convenience Stores:

According to the Institute of Grocery Distribution (IGD), the U.K. food industry's research arm, rising gasoline prices in England are driving more than half of Britons to shop less often and more locally, the Financial Times reports.

The IGD said its monthly analysis of grocery shopper sentiment showed that 52 percent would shop less often if gas prices continued to rise. Additionally, nearly one-third said they would consider shopping more online to save on fuel costs.

"Petrol prices have shot up in the past two years, forcing shoppers with cars to make tough decisions on how they spend their money. They are telling us they plan to prioritize groceries and petrol, while cutting back on other items," said Joanne Denney-Finch, chief executive of the IGD.

Supermarkets' non-food items have been hit hard, as shoppers are avoiding spending on non-essential items. The IGD said that 47 percent of shoppers said they would not spend less on groceries or fuel, but instead would save in other areas.

"The high cost of fuel means that shoppers are thinking about using the Internet more for their food and grocery shopping," Denney-Finch said. "They also plan to reward stores that give fuel discount vouchers and supermarkets with forecourts, as they are seen as offering cheap petrol."

Sainsbury, the U.K.'s third biggest grocery retailer, said there had been "quite a significant step down by consumers" since Christmas. Indeed, industry-wide, sales growth in the grocery sector dropped four percent in the four weeks to February 20, to 2.8 percent in the four weeks to March 20.

TRUSTe Campaigning For Privacy Adherents.

TRUSTe, the corporate consortium supporting a privacy code for Internet commerce, is trying to spark interest in its program through what it calls the TRUSTe Challenge.

It is organizing a petition drive to make examples of companies that do not disclose privacy protection policies on their Web sites. It hopes to encourage companies to license the TRUSTe "trust mark" by submitting to audits and becoming certified as complying with privacy guidelines.

The organization's sponsors include AT&T, International Business Machines, Microsoft, and Netscape. It has begun an advertising campaign with $1 million of space donated by Web publishers.

TRUSTe said it surveyed the 100 most popular Web sites and found 80% posted no personal privacy information. TRUSTe supporters call for self- regulatory steps to build customer trust.

"Merchants must rise to the challenge of giving consumers power over their own data," said on-line privacy advocate Esther Dyson, chairman of the Electronic Frontier Foundation.

"The time to adopt a privacy policy is now," said TRUSTe executive director Susan Scott. "If the industry continues its wanton collection and dissemination of personally identifiable information without informed consent, we will have created an environment on the Internet that is not conducive to commerce. In the end we will all lose."

Intel Adds Windows NT and Internet Support to Flagship Desktop Management Software Product; LANDesk Management Suite Version 2.5 Helps Reduce Costs of Business Computing.

HILLSBORO, Ore.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 22, 1996--Support for Windows NT(a) environments and for operation over the Internet head the new capabilities in a major release of LANDesk(R) Management Suite, the flagship member of Intel Corporation's desktop management software product line, the company announced today.

Version 2.5 of LANDesk Management Suite continues Intel's commitment to reduce the PC support costs found in business computing by providing greater control and increased user uptime for networks of Intel architecture-based personal computers. According to Forrester Research Inc., businesses spend an average of $3,800 annually (including lost productivity) to manage each PC they own. Helping to reduce that expense, LANDesk Management Suite is an integrated suite of 13 applications that allow network administrators to monitor and control systems remotely, keep track of hardware and software components, and distribute software to desktop PCs and servers from a single control console.

The new release, available now, allows a network administrator to monitor Windows NT systems and to use the Internet and corporate intranets for such operations as remote control, inventory and software distribution. While continuing support for Novell NetWare(a) environments, the new version extends the range and flexibility of LANDesk Management Suite to allow customers to manage the diverse networks increasingly found in business computing.

"Intel is delivering on two commitments: making the Intel architecture easy to manage, and lowering the costs of business computing," said Ed Ekstrom, general manager of Intel's Network Products Division. "The new LANDesk Management Suite v2.5 is a robust, full-featured solution for managing clients and servers over the network, and it helps customers realize the full benefits of systems based on Pentium(R) Pro and Pentium processors."

Intel introduced the award-winning, full-featured LANDesk Management Suite v2.0 as the first integrated desktop management suite designed for Novell NetWare(a)-based PC LANs in January 1995. The LANDesk Management Group of products leads the LAN management market segment with 35 percent share for 1995, according to International Data Corporation.

The LANDesk Management Suite v2.5 core system, including a five-node license, is priced at $750 (U.S. suggested list). Additional node licenses are: $1,000 for a 10-node license, $6,250 for a 100-node license, and $50,000 for a 1,000-node license; volume pricing is available for node quantities of more than 5,000. A 50-percent discount (from suggested list price) is available through August to customers who upgrade from a previous version or who purchase the product to complement an enterprise management system that includes elements of LANDesk product technology.

LANDesk Management Suite is available worldwide through a network of distributors and value-added resellers. Additional product information is available at (800) 538-3373 for U.S. and Canadian customers; at (44)1-793-431-155 for European customers; or at 503/629-7354 for other international customers. U.S. TROOPS PUMMEL ENEMY.(MAIN)

Byline: KATHY GANNON and JONATHAN EWING Associated Press

GARDEZ, Afghanistan -- Hundreds of Taliban and al-Qaida fighters were killed Tuesday in the fiercest fighting of the U.S.-led campaign in the rugged mountains of eastern Afghanistan.

In brutal cold, coalition forces battled to reach hideouts still believed to contain hundreds more al-Qaida and Taliban fighters. Some forces entered at least one cave complex, uncovering weapons caches.

U.S. forces said as many as 800 opposition fighters had been seen moving toward the battle since the American-led operation, Operation Anaconda, was launched on Saturday.

``We caught several hundred of them with RPGs (rocket-propelled grenades) and mortars heading toward the fight. We body slammed them today and killed hundreds of those guys,'' said Maj. Gen. Franklin Hagenbeck, the commander of the operation near Gardez, 75 miles south of Kabul, the capital.

Five Marine Corps attack helicopters entered the fight in eastern Afghanistan on Tuesday, supplementing an aerial assault force depleted by damage to Army Apache attack helicopters, Pentagon officials said.

Allied jets flew high over Paktia province, dropping bombs as well as decoy flares to ward off heat-seeking missiles -- defensive measures after two U.S. helicopters were hit Monday, killing seven U.S. soldiers dead in the bloodiest day of combat in the war.

Those killed in Afghanistan since Operation Anaconda began Friday, including one who died Saturday, were honored in Germany before their flag-draped caskets were flown back to the United States. A C-17 transport jet brought the men's remains to Ramstein Air Base and was met on the tarmac by a U.S. Army, Navy and Air Force honor guard for the somber ceremony under cloudy skies in the wooded hills of western Germany.

The American deaths Monday occurred during two operations involving MH-47 Chinook helicopters, officials said. In the first, a helicopter inserting special forces was hit by a rocket-propelled grenade, forcing it down. As it tried to lift off, one American fell out, Rosa said. Another helicopter retrieved the rest of the crew.

The missing serviceman, Navy SEAL Neil C. Roberts, 32, of Woodland, Calif., was captured and killed by al-Qaida. ``We saw him on the Predator being dragged off by three al-Qaida men,'' said Hagenbeck, referring to an unmanned reconnaissance plane mounted with a real-time video camera.

Three hours later, a Chinook was trying to land forces in the same area when it was hit by machine-gun fire and a rocket-propelled grenade. The helicopter was forced down, and a gunbattle took place in which six U.S. soldiers were killed. When members of that helicopter were evacuated, the body of the soldier who fell from the first was found.

Trapped by intense hostile fire and unable to evacuate their wounded for 12 hours, a detachment of American special forces troops fought off an al-Qaida ambush in some of the most grueling and gruesome combat of the five-month-old war in Afghanistan, officials said Tuesday.

When it was over on Monday, the bodies of seven American servicemen and 11 wounded comrades were lifted off the battlefield under guard of AC-130 gunships.

In these other developments in the war on terror:

Six years before suicide hijackers attacked the World Trade Center and Pentagon, the FBI was alerted that Middle Eastern pilots were training at U.S. flight schools and at least one had proposed dive-bombing a jetliner into a federal building, according to documents and interviews with Filipino and U.S. authorities.

The information came from police interrogations of Abdul Hakim Murad and a computer seized from Ramzi Yousef, two men arrested after a chemical fire at a Manila apartment tipped authorities to a terrorist plot linked to Osama bin Laden's al-Qaida network. Murad and Yousef were convicted in the United States and sentenced to life in prison for a plot to blow up 12 U.S.-bound airliners flying out of Asia.

The United States is investigating a plot to bomb government locations in the Afghan capital of Kabul. The plot is believed connected to al-Qaida supporters.

According to The New York Times, newly detected Internet traffic among al-Qaida followers, including intercepted e-mail messages, indicates that elements of the terror network may be trying to regroup in remote sanctuaries in Pakistan near the Afghan border, government officials say.

The White House briefed top members of Congress about a ``shadow government'' set up in the wake of the September terrorist attacks, seeking to quell criticism it had ignored lawmakers in planning for a catastrophic attack on Washington.

Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle, D-S.D., who attended the White House meeting with Republican leader Trent Lott, R-Miss., said he was ready to call a ``cease-fire'' in the dispute over who should have been informed of the White House contingency plans.

Attorney General John Ashcroft said Tuesday the law covering collection of DNA should be expanded to permit the indexing of samples taken from people now in custody in the war against terrorism.

A Real Sign Of Healing; A year after 3/11, the country's Muslims feel at home.(aftermath of Madrid train bombing )

Byline: Stryker McGuire and Mike Elkin

A year ago Madrid's cavernous Atocha train station was filled with twisted steel and mangled bodies, killed by suspected Islamist terrorists. Spain is an ancient battleground between Christians and Muslims. The bombings of March 11, 2004, posed the question: would it be so again?

The answer--no--is clear from an inconspicuous memorial at Atocha. It's a postmodern wall where people can leave their handprints or pen a message. Occasionally someone will scrawl an insult: "Look at how these immigrants thank us!" But another, possibly a Muslim, will write: "Don't generalize. We feel the same pain." Those who feared a backlash have been heartened. "I was afraid," says Mohammed Chaib, a Moroccan-born Muslim congressman in the Catalonian Parliament. And who could fault him, given history? In their attempts to end nearly eight centuries of Moorish rule, the architects of the Christian reconquista banished, killed or converted vast numbers of Muslims to "purify" the Iberian Peninsula. And yet in the past year, says Chaib, "society's behavior was exemplary."

Think of it as a new reconquista, but in reverse. The anniversary of March 11 finds a Spain that has rediscovered its Islamic past--and its Muslims. During the last year, newspapers have churned out stories on the "forgotten Spaniards." Though hard statistics are impossible to come by, Muslim leaders agree that the number of small, neighborhood mosques--so-called garage mosques--is on the rise. So is the number of Roman Catholics converting to Islam. "Just last week someone asked me if he could convert at home or on the Internet," laughs Mansur Escudero, secretary-general of the Islamic Commission of Spain.

After last year's explosions, Catholic and Muslim leaders reached out to one another across religious and historical divides. The government promised to implement a stalled 1992 agreement to fund the teaching of Islam at schools where at least 10 students request it. The regional government in Catalonia offered extracurricular Arabic-language and culture classes for the first time. Madrid set out to improve relations across the Strait of Gibraltar with Morocco, homeland to many Muslim immigrants; in January, Spain's King Juan Carlos addressed the Moroccan Parliament.

The record of reconciliation is by no means unblemished, of course. Despite the fact that the Islamic Commission estimates that 74,000 students have requested special religion classes, the government has been slow to come up with the money and the teachers. After 3/11 the regional government of Aragon proposed removing from its heraldic shield an ancient motif that depicts the decapitated heads of four Moors. That issue remains unresolved. Muslim immigrants still face discrimination in finding a job or place to live. And 3/11 occasioned instances of abuse: insults on the street, racist graffiti, suspicious looks on the Metro.

Still, Muslim leaders say they were surprised by the absence of any serious recrimination or retribution. There was virtually no violence. For their part, Muslim organizations and representatives from 400-odd mosques around the country quickly expressed solidarity. "We absolutely condemn this," declared the Islamic Commission in response to the attacks. In the vast expanse of the Puerta del Sol in Madrid, Muslim demonstrators chanted, "We're Muslims, not terrorists!" and "They're our dead, too!" Fourteen Muslims died in the train attacks, notes Escudero, adding: "The blood of 3/11 is ours, it is everybody's."

What explains the surprising harmony, so in contrast to the ugliness roiling such places as the Netherlands? Spaniards--Muslim as well as Christian--are finding that history can unite as well as divide, says Mercedes del Amo, director of the Contemporary Arabic Studies Department at the University of Granada. Its campus sits in the shadow of the Alhambra, the great citadel of the Moorish rulers of Spain. "The eight centuries of Islam in Spain are eight centuries of our own history," she says. "When we visit the Alhambra, we stand before a vestige of our own culture, of our forebears, independent of religion." Remember, too, she says, that Morocco is just a few kilometers from Spain. "Our relationship with Islam is not one of fascination; it is normal, everyday life."

More modern factors undergird Spain's post-3/11 tolerance, as well. Wearied from decades of Basque violence, and mindful of how quickly the country's previous government wrongly blamed ETA terrorists for the atrocity at Atocha, Spaniards are careful not to equate terrorists with whole communities they may spring from. "We know the difference between ETA and a Basque person," says Chaib, drawing the distinction between ordinary Muslims and Islamist extremists. Spain is also fortunate to have no openly racist or fascist political parties, in contrast to France, the United Kingdom or Holland. Finally, it's worth noting that Spain's Muslim population is relatively small. Despite substantial immigration from North Africa, especially, only 800,000 to 1 million Muslims live in Spain--roughly 2 percent of the country's 40 million people. That compares to 7 percent for France and 6 percent for the Netherlands. Even Denmark and Sweden (with about 3 percent) have larger Muslim shares of the population.

That said, Spain's Muslim population is growing fast. To keep pace with its rapid economic growth, the country needs an annual influx of about 1 million immigrants, many if not most of whom will be Muslim. As it is, the government recently offered amnesty to as many as 1 million immigrants in the country illegally, most of them North African. This alone puts Spain in the vanguard of Europe's efforts to cope with its growing Muslim population and the tensions arising from it. If the reconquista that culminated in 1492 represented one response to a cultural challenge, Spain's equanimity and far-sightedness in responding to 3/11 represents another. That enlightened tolerance will be tested in the years to come, no doubt, but it could hardly be more encouraging--for Spain or the slowly melding Muslim-European world.
