Mar. 13--Is Flagstaff ready for a four-star hotel?
That's the question local economic development officials have been asking for about a decade, ever since they floated the idea of a downtown "convention" center.
But now, after a hotel industry consultant told the City Council that Flagstaff wasn't quite that upscale, the convention center has been scaled back to a "conference" center and moved to the NAU campus, where land is not only cheaper but also outside the jurisdiction of the city's notoriously meddlesome planning department.
The Texas-based Drury Co. is building a hotel next door, but how many stars the facility will receive is up in the air …
