Qld: Barbagallo election rorts case adjourned to April 30

BRISBANE, April 23 AAP - Prosecutors have delayed a committal hearing for alleged LaborParty electoral rorter David Peter Barbagallo.

Crown Prosecutor Brendan Campbell told the Brisbane Magistrates Court today that mattershad arisen and Mr Barbagallo, who is facing six charges arising from Queensland's ElectoralRort inquiry, had agreed to adjourn the hearing for a week.

It's the second delay to the case against the former Goss government adviser, who becamethe only ALP figure to be charged after the Shepherdson Inquiry in 2000 into electoralrorts in Queensland's Labor Party.

Mr Barbagallo refused to comment on the nature of the matters causing the delay ashe left court with his lawyers.

He is facing one charge of forging and uttering electoral enrolment forms and fivecharges of procuring voter registration by false representation.

Magistrate Russell Warfield granted Mr Barbagallo continuing bail until a hearing on April 30.

He has been on bail since being charged in the wake of the inquiry which claimed thescalps of three Queensland Labor MPs.

Former Deputy Premier Jim Elder, and MPs Mike Kaiser and Grant Musgrove resigned fromparliament after confessing to electoral rorts at the inquiry.

Revelations at the inquiry prompted a major overhaul of Queensland Labor's voting systemby Premier Peter Beattie.
