Vic: Grieving relatives call for safety upgrade after drowning
Grief stricken relatives have condemned safety measures at a popular Victorian tourist
site after four members of the same family drowned in a Christmas Day tragedy in the state's
west.
Twelve-year-old MARINA MIR died after she fell into a rockpool at McKenzies Falls in
the Grampians national park on Christmas Day.
Her father MUZAFFER, who was 55, and uncles MAHZAR DAR and TAHIR BHATTI, both aged
35, all poor or non-swimmers, died after they dived in and tried to save her.
Today, KHALID MIR, one of the dead girl's uncles, said the tragedy has been a doomsday
for the family and a fence should have been erected.
Mr MIR says while there was a sign warning against swimming in the pool beneath the
falls, it was invisible.
But local police inspector, BOB THOMSON, says the safety measures in place are adequate
and the falls safe, if the signs are observed.
A 17-year-old girl, who also dived in as part of the rescue, has reportedly been released
from hospital.
